Medical Romance: Do Doctors Marry Other Doctors?
The Real-Life Math of Medical Romance'
There are at least five physician romance drama shows on TV right now – but do doctors marry other doctors? Yes, particularly if you are a woman. Twenty-five percent of female physicians married male physicians. Eleven percent married another health professional – nurse, PA, lab tech. Sixteen percent of male doctors married female doctors, and thirty-five percent are married to nurses, etc.
In laymen’s terms, 37 percent of lady doctors are married into healthcare and 51 percent of male doctors married into healthcare. Therefore, your best chance to marry a doctor is working at the hospital. Age probably skews this more because older doctors are mostly male and didn’t have female doctors to marry – in 1950 women were 5% of medical students. It went up to 20% in the 1970s and currently hangs out at 50% in the US.
I love articles about who marries whom, and this one is awesome. Try it. You can search by job, and it lists the top five heterosexual married occupations and the top homosexual option. (I preferred the mobile version, FYI.)
FUN FACTS YOU WERE DYING TO KNOW
Female nurses and teachers are the preferred partners of male doctors, police officers, paramedics, and firefighters.
Male police, paramedics and firefighters also like female secretaries.
Lesbian firefighters marry . . . business managers and dry cleaners.
Gay male firefighters marry . . . veterinarians.
Gay male paramedics like . . . customer service reps?
Male Construction workers like maids!
Oh, Burn Station 19, Chicago Fire, 9-1-1! But I heard someone is writing some awesome books with some solid research. The main point is that highly educated women tend to marry highly educated men and don’t marry ‘down’ in education.
However, I am psyched that jobs like gay conveyor belt operators marry male nurses, and lesbian probation officers marry lawyers and judges. Cowboy and Indian Chief were not listed as occupations, sorry everyone.
But seriously, nurses are super popular. Just not on TV right now.
