“All right, we have to escape,” Vandy urged her brother, Raj.
“Why? I love the dress you’re wearing to Anna’s New Year’s Eve party.” He pointed to the blue, long-sleeve floral dress she was wearing.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mr. BDSM club.”
They were in the hallway by the bathroom trying to figure out how to bow out of their parents’ annual New Year’s Eve dinner. Her parents had invited acquaintances from near and very very far.
“Mom has introduced me to ten different guys. What did she do—put out a Facebook ad targeting every single Indian guy in Cleveland?”
Raj laughed, “It’s awesome. She didn’t invite any girls for me because she thinks I need to work through my sex fiend phase.”
The bruises on Raj’s face made for quite awkward conversation. “Could you please tell her the truth that you were in a fight already? Every new theory she makes up is wilder and wilder.”
“A fight with whom? Another medical student or a patient while I was on psych? You don’t think Mom would have freaked out and went directly to the medical school administration?”
“Okay, that might be a problem, but you should have come up with something better,” Vandy admonished him.
“Oh, please. Do you think you’re doing that much better, Miss Goodie-Two-Shoes, with your very special best friend ever Anna?”
“Anna and I are really good friends,” Vandy sputtered.
“Yeah. Right. Nice of her to let you spend the night at her parents’ house couple days ago. It took you one day to pick out that dress?”
“Are you saying I was lying?” Vandy crossed her arms over her chest and its very conservative dress.
“Tell me, pumpkin. What did you buy Anna for Christmas since you girls are such good friends?”
“Well,” Vandy hedged. “Maybe I need to work on my stories better. The point is, neither of us have an escape plan.”
“Pretending to be sick has never worked,” Raj said.
“Two doctor parents, total drag,” Vandy agreed.
“Faking injuries isn’t much better. Besides, I already had a very awkward conversation with Dad about how he was worried I might be getting chained up for gay sex in someone’s basement. Apparently the bruises and looking skinny equal ‘the unconventional lifestyle that he will try to support.’”
Vandy compared her memories of Raj from the last time she’d seen him in the summer to his current state. “You are skinnier. How much weight did you lose?”
“No more than ten pounds. I also grew a few inches.”
Vandy used her hand to measure the top of his head. Definite change, so he wasn’t lying. “You’re right. You’re twenty-five. Is it even possible?”
“Can we focus less on me and more on getting out of here? Or do you want to meet a few more guys who ‘happen’ to be passing by tonight.”
“Definitely not. I got it.” Vandy snapped her fingers. “Anna needs my help with her makeup.”
“Much better idea. Puts the blame on someone else. I’ll have to drive you.”
“You got a hot date?”
“Not exactly.” She tapped her foot, so he said, “This would make Mom and Dad flip their lids. A group of med students are going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show’s New Year’s Bash tonight.”
“I’ve never seen that one. What am I missing?” Vandy wasn’t sure she’d ever catch up on her long list of stuff Royce had introduced her to.
“The movie is terrible, but the shows are kinky, I’ve been told since it stars a Transvestite from Transylvania.”
“Oh, and exactly why Mom and Dad can’t find out.”
“Yes, I’m not sure how they’d interpret it if they already jumped on the gay sex train.”
“I’d be nice if they started throwing guys at you,” Vandy peeked past him to see the guys in question milling about in the dining room.
“My interest in guys is only slightly lower than my interest in Indian girls.”
“Even a red-headed guy?” she teased.
“No thanks. I suspect it’s your taste.”
“No comment.” Neither of them could tell their parents about their preferences, lest it upset the apple cart.
“Exactly. Come on, let’s get Anna help with her makeup emergency.”
