Medical TV Show Review: Chicago Fire

Medical TV Show Review: Chicago Fire

Chicago Fire: This is the show that kicked off the recent firefighting TV/Medical drama trend. Dick Wolf ran out of Law and Order projects and had to come up with a new hook. Now we’ve got Chicago Fire/Med/PD. (Chicago Justice lasted one season because I guess the law part of the order wasn’t working. Hey, chin up, SVU is still on forever.)

Date/Seasons: 2012-current, Seasons 1-8 current on NBC

Main cast: Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, Miranda Mayo, among others

Premise: Overly attractive firefighters in Chicago fight fires and do all sorts of dangerous stuff while slowly moving toward sleeping with each other.

Pros: A lot more gritty realism that makes the calls look real and frankly mocks Station 19’s total lack of realism. The fire and rescue scenes take up a lot of time and are very detailed. They have 2-3 crossovers with the other Chicago shows as part of a Dick Wolf plan to own what is left of network TV. Realistic scenes and well researched. (Did you notice that Steve from Sex and the City is a firefighter now?!)

Cons: The drama between characters is really, really, really slow moving. You may be waiting two or three seasons for your favorite characters to hold hands, let alone kiss. Also, once they kiss, one of them has better than average odds of being brutally murdered or burning to death. They do let the deaths cast long shadows unlike Shonda Rimes shows . . .

Overall Impression: Pretty good
